Day 1-Was This Your Life?

Day 1
Was This Your Life?

Took Picture from: http://www.freecdtracts.com/flash1.htm

This series portrays a man who thought only about using his wealth for himself. He did not think about helping other people. He planned to live a life of luxury. He believed that he was in control of the future. He did not realise that God gave him everything, including his life. He was depending on material things. He did not know that he could not take those things with him when he died..(To be continued..)
Luke 12:19

I Forgive Completely Those Who Killed My Husband And Children

I Forgive Completely Those Who Killed My Husband And Children
Graham Stuart Staines (1941-January 1999) was an Australian missionary who was burnt to death along with his two sons Philip (aged 9) and Timothy (aged 7) while sleeping in his station wagon at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district in Orissa, India in January 1999. In 2003, the Hindu activist Dara Singh was convicted of leading the gang. Graham Staines had been working in Orissa among the tribal poor and especially with leprosy patients since 1965.He has been accused by Hindus of being a zealous evangelical. While there is a perception that he converted many tribals to Christianity, the rise in Christian population in the district claimed by opponents is very slight.

Life history
Graham Staines was born in 1941 at Palmwoods, Queensland, Australia. He visited India in 1965 for the first time and joined Evangelical Missionary Society of Mayurbhanj (EMSM), working in this remote tribal area, with a long history of missionary activity. Staines took over the management of the Mission at Baripada in 1983. He also played a role in the establishment of the Mayurbhanj Leprosy Home as a registered society in 1982. He met Gladys June in 1981 while working for leprosy patients, and they married in 1983, and have been working together since then. They had three children, daughter Esther and two sons Philip and Timothy. He spoke fluent Oriya and was very popular among the patients whom he used to help after they were cured. He used to teach how to make mats out of rope and basket from Saboigrass and hand weaving.
Death
On the night of January 22, 1999, Graham Staines had attended a jungle camp, an annual gathering of Christians of the area to strengthen fellowship and for teaching. In the night he was sleeping in his station wagon when it was set afire by a mob. Graham and his two sons (both minors) were burnt alive.

Subsequent events

Initial investigations, conducted by the Mayurbhanj police, pointed towards the involvement of Dara Singh, the adopted name of Ravindra Pal Singh, a activist who had been active in the region since 1989. On January 29, 1999, the Government of India set up a judicial commission of inquiry under Justice D.P. Wadhwa of the Supreme Court to investigate the murder. The commission was to submit a report in two months but this was changed to 5 months in March 1999. In that same month, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation from the state police. In June 1999, the commission submitted its report holding Dara Singh guilty of the crime. The very next day, the CBI submitted chargesheets against the people involved. In January 2000, Dara Singh was arrested from a forest in Mayurbhanj district. In September 2000, charges were brought against the accused. Trial began in March 2001 in a district and sessions court designated a CBI court. In February 2002, an accused, Mahendra Hembram said in court that he was the sole culprit and that the others were innocent. In April 2003, accused Dayanidhi Patra said in court that he was present when Dara Singh set fire to the vehicle. The trial ended in August 2003 and judgement was passed in September 2003 convicting Dara Singh and Hembram. In spite of Gladys Staines' appeal for mercy, Dara Singh was sentenced to death and 12 others were given life imprisonment .

However, the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in May 2005 by the Orissa High Court , who also acquitted the other appellants. Gladys returned to India in June 2006, and in an interview underlined the importance of forgiveness. "In forgiveness, there is no bitterness and when there is no bitterness, there is hope. This consolation comes from Jesus Christ." On Mar 19, 2007, the Supreme Court issued notice to the CBI on a petition filed by Mahendra Hembrom challenging the Orissa High Court verdict, saying that his confessional statement before the trial court, in which he had said that he killed Graham Staines, should be considered in toto.
In her affidavit before the Commission on the death of her husband and two sons Gladys Staines says :-
"The Lord God is always with me to guide me and help me to try to accomplish the work of Graham, but I sometimes wonder why Graham was killed and also what made his assassins to behave in such a brutal manner on the night of 22nd / 23rd  January, 1999. It is far from my mind to punish the persons who were responsible for the death of my husband Graham and my two children.  But it is my desire and hope that they would repent and would be reformed."
The Pioneer Newspaper quotes her interview given to Doordarshan as under :-
"BARIPADA:  The widow of G.S. Staines has said the perpetrators of the crime should be forgiven as it was the Almighty who had drawn the life span of her husband “God gives children.  He gives them life.  He gives and takes. I am grateful to God for giving him (Staines) this long a life to serve people," Gladys Staines told DD.  "We cannot demand a longer life from God than what He has decided for each of us," she said.  Mrs. Staines was a picture of poise as she stood yards away from the verandah where three coffins had been lined up.  Her resilience seemed to have passed on to her 13-year-old daughter Easther who stayed by her mother's side ever since the killing.  Women mourners seeking to console her broke into sobs every now and then.  "I've no hatred for anyone.  "I've no anger," Mrs. Staines responded."

Even after the brutal killing of his husband and two little kids, his widow forgave the killers and  still continues to do the good work that her husband started. Where can such a heart come from rather than from God Himself.Missionary widow Gladys Staines said. “Every person should be given a chance to rebuild his or her life”, she is quoted as having said in a telephone conversation from Australia where she now lives, making periodic visits into Mayurbhanj in Orissa where the Staines’ Leprosy Home and missionary society is still going strong.

The missionary(means a follower of God), Staines came down from a luxurious life to a complete remote tribal village to help the poor the needy. He helped the lepers and treated them with kindness. He taught the people their livelihood. Who would come down to this level and do things like this for the fellow humans who we never remember as existing. Is it for the name?, for the fame?. No not at all. It was all for the Love that Christ had put in him for the fellow people. But the result of doing good was death along with his little kids and his wife and daughter left alone.  Now this is what we call us persecuted for Christ’s sake. Yet we will speak about the love of Christ to our fellow human beings till our last breath and keep on showing them our love and concern. Are you ready for this sharing?

Singing and Praising God in Chains

Singing and Praising God in Chains
When it comes to suffering for doing good, Jesus comes as a best example. He was nailed on the Cross for He healed the sick, raised the dead, chased out demons and saved people out of their sins. But since we have recited the story of Jesus many times to you all, we are sending you yet another example of people in the Bible who suffered for the sake of preaching the word of God and doing good. They are Paul and Silas. They were disciples of Jesus. Paul once visited a place of worship by the riverside. They told many many people about Jesus. Some were very happy to hear and others were angry because they did not like being  changed. They dint like it when they said Jesus would forgive them and they would become sinless. They did not believe Jesus to forgive their sins. Now there he saw a slave girl whose body had been taken over by a demon, an evil spirit. She was able to tell people what was going to happen in the future. All fortune tellers are able to predict future as they have links with evil spirits. Her owners saw they could make some money by having her tell people what was going to happen to them. As she followed Paul and the others around, the demon in her recognized who they were and shouted, "These men are servants of the Most High God who are telling you the way to be saved." This went on day after day. Paul felt sorry for the girl and turned around, and in the name of Jesus commanded the spirit to come out of her. (Jesus had told them earlier, when he was teaching them, that they would be able to cast out devils.)Immediately the evil spirit left her, and she was in her right mind, but she could no longer foretell the future. Her masters could not use her anymore to gain money for them. You can imagine their anger at Paul, who had ruined their fortune telling business. They grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities, accusing them of causing an uproar and teaching against their way of life.

Then the crowd was stirred up and became angry, and the magistrates, or judges ordered them to be stripped of their clothing and beaten. They were unmercifully flogged and then, weak and bleeding, they were thrown into an inner cell of the prison and their feet were put in stocks. Their legs were spread wide apart and their feet put through holes in the wooden device which was used for torture as well as for securing the prisoners. Then a jailer was commanded to guard them. If he failed to keep them in the prison, he would be killed. He had a great responsibility. Did Paul and Silas moan and complain about being beaten and put in prison? No, the Bible says that about midnight they were praying and singing hymns to God. There were other prisoners in the cell listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, and the prison shook. The doors opened and the chains came off all the prisoners, but nobody tried to escape.
However, when the jailer woke up and saw the doors opened, he started to take his own life because he knew he would be killed if his prisoners had escaped. Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" The jailer was so frightened he was trembling. He called for some lights so he could look inside the cell. He fell down at the feet of Paul and Silas. He said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They told him to believe in Jesus, and they preached about the Lord to the jailer and the people of his household. That same hour he took the two men and washed the wounds they had received in the beatings. He knew he had been wrong, and he wanted to do right. He brought Paul and Silas to his house and fed them. The whole family was so happy! They were now believers in God. The next day officers were sent to the jail to tell them to release Paul and Silas. Paul and Silas went back to a believer called Lydia's house and met with the believers there. Then they left to go preach elsewhere.

They made no mistake, yet they were thrown into the prison . They spoke the word of God to the people for which they were beaten up. Even after they were beaten up, scourged and torn to pieces they did not cease to Praise and sing to the Lord. This is called persecuted for doing good, persecuted for Christ sake. In this example, see what has happened. They praised God and they were released from their chains and the doors of prison opened. How beautifully the Lord delivered them. But they stayed there to save the life of the Jailer who was in charge of them who would be killed if they escaped. How much his heart was filled with God’s love that they cared even for the man who scourged them. As a result the jailer also accepted the Lord. This is called sharing the love of Christ to all people around us amidst any situation. Are you ready to share God’s love even in your worst situation?

Persecuted for doing Good!!

Day 9
Beatitudes

Many nations in Asia and Africa forbid the preaching about Christ and His love to fellow people. Those who try to spread the word of Christ here are being punished. It is considered to be more than just civil disobedience resulting in punishment -- the price is often the loss of life. In our present societies, most of us will not be hunted down for preaching or accepting Christ. However, we should expect verbal abuse which would  be hard for us to bear. But this has not shocked any of us though it is an injustice done to us that we don’t have freedom to share our faith. We have expected these even before we shared about Jesus. We are ready to lay our own life for the One who laid His own life for us...". Many people think that Christians try to convert the other people to their religion. But strictly speaking it is not the conversion of religion what we are aiming at. But the sharing of goodness, the blessings that we have got from Christ, the love, the mercy, the care, forgiveness from sin and redemption from sin. It is so much that it overflows in us and we cannot hold it within us but speak out about it to almost everyone we see.

(CEV)  God blesses those people who are treated badly for doing right. They belong to the kingdom of heaven.

How can I get started in making Peace(Part 4)

How can I get started in making Peace(cntnd)
Step10
Rom 12:18  and do your best to live at peace with everyone.
To live at peace with everyone is to live at peace within yourself .Think about this, now you have made a decision to hold peace with everybody, so whenever there is an argument you make peace there. Think about your opponent, when you make peace with him, he has no other go than to be quiet or worst case grab some other to fight with.  The same way if  many are starting to make their mind to be at peace with every other person and it continues, how do you think the place you are living at would be? Wont it change because of you and the few others who  have made such a decision to be at peace. Wont that be a heaven on earth. Like a smile, this peace also will spread from you to the next person, the next and on and on. So are you ready to spread peace, for the sake of Christ.

Step11
Rom 12:21  Don't let evil defeat you, but defeat evil with good.
When someone is doing bad things to you, your natural feeling is to get back at them or repay them for what they have done. But this is like you are overcome by the evilness and defeated by the devil by making you do a wrong thing. But instead each time a person does bad things to you.. try returning good to them. Pray for them, bless them  instead of cursing them. Love them. I know am telling you tough things. But we can do all things through Jesus who will strengthen us. So as you read the mail don’t think “O, these people are speaking about impossible things.” No we are not. "True it's really difficult for human beings. It's rightly said - 'to forgive is divine'. only with Jesus' help it's possible Ask Jesus in prayer with tears to change your heart. Jesus' is an expert in doing miracles but the greatest can be change of your own heart. Why don’t you just give a try on these things and experience the same things we are already experiencing in the Lord.

(Hindi) बुराई से न हारो परन्‍तु भलाई से बुराई का जीत लो।।
