A Man After My Heart!

A Man After My Heart!

After David killed Goliath, he went back to live in the palace with King Saul. King Saul had a son named Jonathan, and David and Jonathan became best friends.David also joined the army and won many more battles for Israel. All of the Israelites loved David and they made songs to sing about him. When King Saul heard the songs, he became jealous. He thought that people were starting to like David more than they liked him. Saul was troubled by the distressing spirit and so he asked David to play some music for him so that maybe he could feel better. But while David was playing his instrument, King Saul picked up a spear and threw it at David. He tried to kill David because people liked David more than him, but David moved out of the way and the spear missed him. Saul said he was sorry. Then he sent David to fight in another war against the Philistines. Saul hoped that David would die in the battle against the Philistines, but he didn’t. Then Saul said, “David, I want you to marry my daughter, Princess Michal. All you have to do is kill 100 Philistines.” King Saul thought, “David will never be able to kill a 100 Philistines. They’ll kill him for sure.” But David killed 200 Philistine soldiers, and so King Saul had to let David marry Princess Michal. Meanwhile, King Saul kept getting more and more jealous of David. Finally, he told his son, Jonathan, and the rest of his soldiers to kill David. But Jonathan was David’s best friend and he warned David to run away. David went home, but some of Saul’s soldiers came to kill him. Seeing them coming, Princess Michal, David’s wife, helped David escape out the window. Some of the soldiers who liked David more than Saul went with him and they made their own army in the desert. Two times, King Saul and his army went out chasing David so that King Saul could kill him. As long as Saul was alive he sought to kill David, but David never tried to kill Saul because he believed that Saul was once anointed by God and that he did not want to kill God’s anointed person.
Lesson to be Learnt:
Much of David’s life was spent in running for his life as he was always sought by Saul to be killed. David wrote many of the Psalms, a book in the Bible. If you read the psalms, you can see that amidst all these troubles, David sought the Lord with all his heart. He was always praising, praying and singing about the Lord. Even if he was sad he expressed it to the Lord. He poured his heart at the feet of the Lord. He was  thinking about what God wanted even in those troubled times. That’s why the Lord called David “a man after His own heart”. Today if the Lord were to give us a name what do you think it would be – “ Complainer”, “Dull”, “Selfish” etc or would He call us just as He called David. Are we concerned about praising and singing to God even at those worst times of our lives? Are we thinking about doing the will of God more than what we desire? Think about it my friend!
